I had this amazing idea a few nights ago.. I thought I found the perfect way to give back to the people who have supported me the most in my career over the past few years.. I pledged to give 1% of all future tournament wins to anyone who pre-registers to Club WPT Gold using my code/referral link. The idea seemed so simple, let those who support me also win when I win - almost a direct correlation in sharing any of my successes with others. Fans win by receiving a free-roll and chance at winning. WPT wins to get more sign ups. I win by making WPT happy.. a win/win/win.
Now just a few days later, I don’t love my proposal at all to be honest. I wish I revised this and thought about things with more clarity.. now before you think I’m about to re-neg on this, don't worry I’m not. Let me explain..
I just got finished doom scrolling my tik tok feed for 30~ minutes and came across one that featured a successful man who created gorilla glue pitch something on shark tank. This guy is clearly wealthy and successful, by no means did he need a capital investment - and when asked about this, he just wanted the shark’s time. He says time is the utmost valuable resource, it’s finite and one that we can never get back. Each passing second and minute that is used, is used for good. So he wanted one of the shark’s time and selling a small % of his company for a brilliant person’s time is well worth the trade-off.
Immediately by my conscious and sub-conscious brain started going to work. Thinking about my time, what’s valuable to me, then jumped into my relationship with poker and all that time I spend to travel and play cards. And it landed on how immensely and deeply fucking grateful I am to be able to wake up every day and do what I love. And I would never have the opportunity to do this if it wasn’t for each and every single individual who’s ever clicked on a YouTube video, showed up to a meet-up game, or just came across a live stream and watched me punt. To those who read these on a consistent basis, thank you; to those who have watched 3 seconds of a cringey Instagram video and clicked off, also thank you.
So why am I exactly re-thinking my offer of giving away 1% of tournament wins? To be frank, I personally don’t think it’s enough. 5 years ago, I graduated from being a broke college student without a clue in the world what I wanted to do.. and now I can travel the world, create content, and compete in an arena that I love. The journey has utterly been life changing. And if it hasn’t been obvious (from my play style and punts), I don’t play poker necessarily as a goal to make money. Don’t get me wrong, money is nice and profiting sometimes would be cool; but I play to compete, to win, and most importantly chase that rush and feeling of winning. I play poker for all the intangibles - like the rush of dopamine and anxiety that comes with waiting for your opponent to fold when you’re bluffing all in, or for the earth shattering pain and anguish you feel watching the Ace on the river to end the tournament run.
So why not share all the glory and pain with everyone who’s helped me get to this point? To have a true stake in every poker decision and be “bought in”.. not just the massive tournament binks.. but every single tournament. So i’m upping the stakes - I want to pledge 1% free-roll of every tournament CASH to someone who signs up under my link, not just my wins. So if I bust, everyone loses (aka no one wins). If I min-cash for X amount, a random person will receive 1% of that amount. Or if I luck box my way to winning another 25K for $900K~ again, then yes 1% of those winnings will be going o you guys as well. Thank you for supporting me and I want reciprocate the favor in any way I can.
